Hector’s struggles were real – he didn’t even have the basic necessities, like clothing! He shares how he “got into some trouble with the law” at age 18, after his mother died. But what happened next is shocking! He remembers, “So when I got out of jail, I was just in a T-shirt… Or no, I didn’t have no T-shirt, I just had sweatpants on. I didn’t have any shoes or a shirt at all, and I didn’t have nowhere to go.” No one should have to experience hopelessness like that! Hector found a friend, who called Crossroads Mission Avenue in Grand Island, where he found the help he needed. Hector reflects, “I’m not sure where I would’ve ended up!” He now has a good job, and plans for the future, thanks to the help that Crossroads could offer!

Your generous donation to Grand Island Crossroads Mission Avenue through Go Big GIVE Day again this year will help men like Hector who are struggling and need the guidance and stability that Crossroads is able to provide through safe, sober, sanitary, supportive housing and programming. The needs in our community are many, as the cost of housing and living expenses remain high. Daily, families come to the Mission for help. In 2023, Grand Island Crossroads provided vital food assistance to 1,939 families through food boxes, while 44 individuals received almost $3,000 worth of clothing and household items at no cost through our Mission Avenue Thrift Community Needs Voucher Program. Helping our neighbors get back on their feet – that’s the help and hope that individuals can find at Crossroads!
